The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation or Chrismation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.
Sacraments are “powers that comes forth” from the Body of Christ, which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are “the masterworks of God” in the new and everlasting covenant.
Baptism
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other Sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, and made sharers in His mission. Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and the Word.

Holy Name Parish partners with her sister parish, St. Philip Neri-Blessed Sacrament, to offer Baptism preparation classes in either English or in Spanish. These classes are for expectant parents and for parents of children under the age of seven, along with their chosen sponsors (godparents). Participation in a preparation class is required before scheduling a Baptism. Please contact the parish office to register for a class and begin the process.
Reconciliation
Those who approach the Sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offenses committed against Him and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins.

Children prepare for First Reconciliation through our Religious Education program or at their Catholic school. Adults prepare through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).

Eucharist
The Holy Eucharist completes Christian initiation. Those who have been raised to the dignity of the royal priesthood by Baptism and configured more deeply to Christ by Confirmation participate with the whole community in the Lord’s own sacrifice by means of the Eucharist.
At the Last Supper, on the night He was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of His Body and Blood to perpetuate the sacrifice of the Cross throughout the ages until He should come again.

Children prepare for First Holy Communion through our Religious Education program or at their Catholic school. Adults prepare through OCIA.
Confirmation
Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation together constitute the sacraments of Christian initiation. Through Confirmation, the baptized are strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and more perfectly bound to the Church.

Matrimony
The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children. This covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.

Couples wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony at Holy Name Parish should contact the parish office and speak with a priest at least six months before their desired wedding date.
Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to His apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. It includes the three degrees of episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate.

Anointing of the Sick
By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that He may raise them up and save them.
